Deck description:
Tarot Emblemata CHROMATA is an 88-card magical & mystical Tarot deck of Renaissance Emblems with their original latin or French mottos and a mini booklet inside each deck with keywords interpreting the Tarot archetypes & symbolism.
“CHROMATA,” which means “colors” in Greek. This deck embodies all the positive feelings colors can inspire, bringing rich hues to Claude Paradin’s 470-year-old woodcut Emblems and engravings and their many plumes, helmets, swords, gemstone rings, coins, wands, clouds, wreaths, flowers, animals, trees, and Renaissance courtly and country folk taking the Emblemata to a whole new level.
In Photoshop I digitally repaired the museum's archived files, optimizing the emblem's contrast, line quality, sharpness, and saturation. In 2023 I colorized the black & white originals and made the CHROMATA Emblems larger to fill the card size. Inviting a playful exploration, the Tarot format is a great way to access the wisdom and revelations of Emblemata through divination: their visual language is a fusion of the arts of illustration & writing in a dynamic interplay between ancient & iconic images alongside their allegorical and oracular meanings.

More about Emblems and the deck I created:
The French historian, genealogist, and writer Claude Paradin was a collector of Emblems and the creator of the Emblem Book called “Devises Heroïques” first published in 1551 in Lyons, France, printed by Jean de Tournes, with woodcut illustrations attributed to Bernard Salomon. Descendants of Greek, Roman, and Egyptian antiquity, ancient mythology, and medieval bestiaries, Renaissance Emblems are intimate and compelling illustrations (woodcut or engravings) accompanied by mottos of text and verse that allegorically and symbolically express sentiments, concepts, societal concerns, and parables that were current in the social and cultural life of 16th and 17th-century continental and Baroque Europe. An emblem inspires a synergistic interplay of interpretation and understanding between the image called the pictura, and its subtext motto called a subscription. Originally "emblemata” which is the plural of the Greek "emblema,” meant a piece of ornament with representations of people, animals, design motifs, banners, scrolls with inscriptions, and other objects in a Hellenistic or Roman mosaic. Both secular and religious, Emblems from 1500-1750 and their didactic Latin, French, and Vernacular mottos crystallize virtue or vice and cover “every possible sphere of early modern knowledge: ethics, natural philosophy, politics, science, religion, love, war, and everyday life.” -(Wade, Mara R.)
Tarot Emblemata CHROMATA is an accessible deck for beginners and those familiar with the Rider-Waite-Smith system, while at the same time refreshing for more experienced readers who are looking for a new and alternative take on the cards.
The charm of these Emblems is that they become “activated” by the user’s intention. They can be decoded of clues and secrets to reveal their meaning and magic. They are intended to coax the reader into a contemplative state of associations, acting as prompts & catalysts. By tapping into the field of subtle energies surrounding these mystical, metaphysical, and occult illustrations, relevant divinatory results and inspiring new perspectives follow, catalyzing self-knowledge and helping you expand on your path of embodiment, spiritual gnosis, inspired destiny, and empowerment.
International shipping is by Priority Mail, and the decks are bubble-wrapped twice.
